ABOUT US

SOLUTIONS JOURNALISM WITHOUT BORDERS IS THE WORLD'S FIRST INDEPENDENT INTERNATIONAL SOLUTIONS JOURNALISM STUDY PROGRAM.

Solutions Journalism Without Borders (SOJOWB) stands as the world's pioneering independent international solutions journalism study program. Established in 2021 by Stephanie Capper, an Australian freelance journalist, documentary producer, and former Solutions Journalism Network LEDE Fellow, SOJOWB's core mission revolves around assembling cohorts of aspiring journalists in marginalized communities around the world that are home to changemakers responding to chronic social or environmental challenges. During SOJOWB's immersive international learning experiences, students acquire the skills needed for high-impact solutions reporting that amplifies marginalized voices and reframes the narrative of the single story in some of the world's most underrepresented communities.

SOJOWB's tailored three- to four-week programs accommodate student journalists, entry-level professionals, and experienced journalists alike, all deeply passionate about enhancing their skillsets. By maintaining small, limited-capacity groups, we ensure personalized one-on-one coaching opportunities. The solutions stories crafted at the culmination of each program have demonstrated their ability to kick-start budding journalism careers, enhance portfolios, or rejuvenate established journalism careers with a solutions-oriented focus. SOJOWB is committed to cultivating a new generation of journalists equipped to inspire positive change in journalism and beyond.

WHY DO WE EXIST?

Solutions Journalism Without Borders believes that by only reporting on what’s going wrong, we fail to portray an accurate picture of the world.  And we delight in finding solutions and sharing responses to problems with the global community.

By applying the Solutions Journalism Network's Four Pillars of Solutions Journalism to our practice, we embrace the opportunity to tell 'the WHOLE Story', which studies show strengthens citizenship, sparks constructive discourse, unleashes the power of positive deviance, increases self efficacy to enhance our capacity to solve problems & delegitimizes excuses to better hold those in power to account.

My name is Stephanie Capper

I am a multifaceted freelance correspondent, solutions journalist, documentary producer, and seasoned study abroad educator originally hailing from the Gold Coast, Australia. Presently, I split my time between Guatemala and Spain.

My focus lies in investigating human rights, social justice, and environmental challenges, always with a solutions-oriented perspective. My work has been featured in renowned media outlets like the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, SBS, Dateline, and the Huffington Post. Additionally, I have traversed the globe, both as a traveler and educator, imparting knowledge on documentary filmmaking with Actuality Abroad. Over the course of my journey, I've co-produced more than 20 short and micro-documentaries spotlighting changemakers across Asia, Africa, and Central America, with a particular emphasis on Guatemala.

Over the years, I have actively engaged with the Solutions Journalism Network, participating in their mentorship program in 2020 and becoming a part of the esteemed LEDE Fellow cohort in 2021. To further enhance my expertise, I successfully completed the Solutions Journalism Network Train the Trainers program in 2023. My unwavering commitment to solutions journalism continues to drive my work and aspirations.
