Founded with the support of the Solutions Journalism Network's LEDE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The *all new* SOJOWB Guatemala Fast Track is an intensive eight-day international reporting program designed for students and early-career journalists who want to experience reporting in Guatemala but cannot commit to our month-long program.

And when we say fast track, we mean it. You won’t arrive in Guatemala on day one and start scrambling for a story. The program begins before you get here.

In the weeks leading up to the Fast Track, you’ll join online sessions with SOJOWB to explore potential story ideas, learn the foundations of solutions journalism and begin developing your reporting plan.

You’ll complete guided background research, familiarize yourself with the community and context you’ll be reporting within, identify potential sources and work through preparatory materials before travelling.

The goal is simple: when you arrive at Lake Atitlán, you’re ready to report.

That preparation is also central to how we approach international journalism. SOJOWB does not believe that reporting abroad should mean parachuting into a community, extracting a story and leaving.

Responsible international reporting requires context, humility, collaboration and an understanding that the people closest to an issue are not simply sources, but experts in their own communities and experiences.

Your initial idea is therefore a starting point, not a predetermined conclusion. Once in Guatemala, you’ll spend time listening, asking questions and allowing your reporting to challenge your assumptions and shape the direction of your story.

The Fast-Track Overview:

Over eight intensive days, you will:

  • Learn how to identify and report a rigorous solutions journalism story

  • Prepare through online sessions, guided research and reporting materials before arriving in Guatemala

  • Learn to understand the social, cultural and ethical context of reporting within another community

  • Connect with local changemakers, organizations, experts and community members responding to complex challenges prior to arrival

  • Report your story in the field at Lake Atitlán

  • Workshop your reporting with SOJOWB mentors and your cohort

  • Develop your reporting into a strong, publication-ready story

  • Learn to pitch your work strategically to editors and publications

  • Leave with continued editorial guidance as you complete and pitch your story after the program

The Fast-Track is shorter by design, but the experience extends beyond the eight days you spend in Guatemala. Preparation begins before arrival, and our support does not disappear when you get on the plane home.

Places are deliberately limited so that every participant receives meaningful editorial guidance and support throughout the reporting process.

Come prepared to work hard, ask better questions, rethink your assumptions and experience what international reporting can look like when it is done with communities, rather than simply about them.
