SCHOLARSHIPS

In line with our commitment to community inclusion, Solutions Journalism Without Borders offers up to 6 full on-location scholarships per program * to journalism students and entry-level journalists who are citizens or residents in the communities we travel to.

We also understand that taking time off from studies, work or other obligations and commitments may not be feasible for everyone, which is why we're pleased to announce that we've opened up an additional 6 part-time remote scholarships per program. These scholarships can be undertaken partly or fully remote, depending on the scholarship participants needs. For more details, scroll down.

To be eligible for a 2023 SOJOWB scholarship, you'll need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be a resident or citizen of Vietnam or Guatemala (or countries that share a border with Guatemala) 

  • Be currently studying journalism or a related/transferable degree (such as communications, political science, development) or have completed a degree in journalism or related/transferable degree or be an aspiring entry-level journalist

  • Be available to attend the majority of briefings and workshops in the applicable SOJOWB program

  • Can commit to co-producing a solutions-oriented story that will be featured in the yearly SOJOWB e-magazine

  • Have a good level of English fluency (written and spoken) which is required for the briefings and workshops

Supported by the Solutions Journalism Network's LEDE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

FULL SCHOLARSHIP INCLUSIONS:

  • Accommodation in a semi-private homestay or hostel (breakfast included)

  • Pre- and post-arrival orientation and onsite coordinator

  • Welcome day consisting of a local neighborhood walking tour, team-building excursion and welcome dinner

  • Educational briefings and workshops on the theory and practice of Solutions Journalism, including guest lectures from professional journalists and thought leaders

  • Weekly networking events with journalists, community leaders and/or changemakers to facilitate and accelerate community and industry immersion

  • Personal development workshops

  • Logistical support & access to translators for field trips (as required)

  • Access to a ‘base camp’ to learn and work (including free coffee, tea, water and Wi-Fi)

  • Mentored collaborative production of one (1) solutions story, peer review sessions and guidance on how to pitch the story to editors from experts in the field

  • A special end-of-program presentation/community event

  • Shared airport transfers

  • Certificate of completion

  • Post-program, a SOJWB e-magazine featuring participants' profiles and a compilation of solutions stories produced during the program

  • Fundraising advice, if required

  • Plus more value adds still in the works!

REMOTE SCHOLARSHIP INCLUSIONS:

  • All SOJOWB briefings and workshops on the theory and practice of Solutions Journalism, including guest lectures from professional journalists and thought leaders

  • All personal development workshops

  • Mentored collaborative production of one (1) solutions story, peer review sessions with the on-location cohort and guidance on how to pitch the story to editors from experts

  • Access to dedicated SOJOWB cohort WhatsApp group

  • Post program, a SJWB e-magazine featuring participants profiles and a compilation of solutions stories produced during the program

  • Plus more value adds still in the works!

*Remote scholarship recipients are also welcome to join in-person sessions at base camp, according to their availability
